Due to the celebration of U20 Africa Cup of Nations 2017 that will be hosted in Zambia, we organised a training camp in Spain where U20 Zambia National Team faced CD Tenerife (Spain), FC Basel (Switzerland) and FC Barcelona (Spain).
Zambia U20 landed in the island of Tenerife last January towards a team concentration before the beginning of AFCON 2017. Daily trainings took place at both, “Estadio Municipal Los Cuartos” and CD Tenerife facilities, in La Orotava and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, respectively. Initial plans of having the team camping in Spanish Mainland changed due to hard metheorologycal conditions during last Winter in Europe. Receiving Zambian squad in Canary Islands was a perfect solution due to its weather advantages.
The African combinate played the first match against CD Tenerife B at CD Tenerife Sport City, beating them by 1-0, goal scored by Mumba Mwape in minute 83. Three days later they faced FC Basel B at Tenerife Top Training, achieving another victory and repeating same score achieved against Tenerife B. One goal by Zambian number 7, Chrispin Sakulanda, was enough to beat the Swiss contingent.
Last days of the camp were held in Madrid and Barcelona where they performed trainings at “Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas”, visited “Santiago Bernabéu Stadium” and finished with the last friendly match against FC Barcelona B at “La Masía”. A lonely goal for Zambia by Enock Mwepu was not enough to prevent Barça’s victory for 3-1.
An intensive 2 week training camp in the Spanish territory ensures that Zambia U20 is well prepared for 2017 AFCON and ready to become new king of Africa. We wish all the best to Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and Zambia U20 National Team.
